Spam Solutions Dave’s Quest For The Ultimate Anti Spam Package 0

Sep24

Searching for the perfect Anti Spam appliance can be like the quest for the Holy Grail. You’re never quite sure whether what you’re looking for really exists.

There are a variety of solutions on offer, ranging from disposable email addresses to getting your own anti spam exchange server. I’ve tried most of them. I don’t think I’ve discovered the anti spam software Grail yet, but I’ve made some important discoveries.

Do you need a Spam Solution?

It’s curious. We accept unsolicited advertising in most areas of life. We didn’t ask for advertising on TV or radio, yet we don’t refer to it as spam. We certainly don’t ask for billboards, as if we need something to stare at on our way to work, and yet we don’t normally complain either, and when we do, it tends to be about content, not about the fact that we didn’t ‘opt in’ to billboard advertising as a medium. Yet when unsolicited advertising comes to us in the form of email, we tend to get very upset and not a little self-righteous. What’s the difference?

I assume the difference is that it’s harder to deal with.

With the TV or radio, we simply change channels. With newspapers and billboards, there’s always something else to look at. Yet when unsolicited emails fill our inbox, we can’t just ignore them and hope they’ll go away. At the very least, we have to delete them. And given that spammers routinely try to make their rubbish look like something we were expecting, we have to spend time sorting the wheat from the chaff. When there are only a handful of tares in the wheat, this is manageable. But the longer you stay online, the larger that handful becomes.

Three types of Anti Spam Solutions

1. Prevention is better than cure

Perhaps the most obvious solution is to avoid getting on the spammers’ mailing list in the first place. Some people suggest that if you follow a few basic rules and never give out your email address to companies that you don’t know, you will never end up on spam lists.

Unfortunately this only works up to a point. I’ve found over the years that I get plenty of spam to addresses that I never give out. How do the spammers get me? They generate random addresses until they find me!

The spammers pick major players – AOL, Hotmail, etc. – and send out a million emails to dave000@aol.com, dave002@aol.com, dave003@aol.com, etc. From a million, perhaps only a thousand emails don’t bounce back, but that means they’ve found 1000 real people, and they’ll now keep those addresses, mail to them again, and sell the addresses to other spammers!

Bottom line: you can’t avoid the spammers forever.

Of course, you can keep changing email addresses and so keep one step ahead of the spammers. Disposable email addresses are not hard to find nowadays. The problem here though is that you end up wasting more time than you save. Keeping all your contacts up to date with your ever-changing email address is likely to consume far more time than a daily clean-out of your inbox?

2. Anti Spam Inbox Filters

The second type of spam appliances are those that sort through the email that is in your inbox and throw it out before you get to it.

These programs generally require both an initial anti spam software purchase and an ongoing subscription, as file definitions continually need to be updated.

This type of solution is superior to thinking that you can avoid being spammed. It is not ideal though. Three reasons:

It can be quite expensive.

The spam is still downloaded to your inbox. This can take up a lot of time if you’re receiving between two and three hundred spams per day (as I do).

It is never 100% accurate. The technology of offensive weaponry always stays ahead of defensive weaponry. Hence spammers will most likely always be a step ahead of those who are trying to keep them out. Some spam will get through, and even more importantly, some emails you wanted to receive will be mistakenly weeded out as spam!
Now admittedly, with this last problem, most inbox-based anti spam solutions do allow you to review the emails that they’ve flagged as spam before you delete them, but this takes you back to the task of sorting through all your emails, and the whole idea of your anti spam appliance is that it’s supposed to free you up from doing this!

3. Server-based Anti Spam Solutions

In my opinion, server-based Anti Spam solutions are the way to go.

Most commonly, this solution just invokes filters, similar to those used in the inbox-based anti spam solutions. But the difference is that you don’t have to waste time waiting for the rubbish to download nor do you spend time installing updated filter definitions every week.

Another type of server-based anti spam filter is that used by Spam Arrest, who are my Anti Spam Appliance of choice.

What makes Spam Arrest different is that they don’t actually filter anybody out. They just bounce back an email to the sender, asking them if they will identify themselves as a real human being.

The system works on the assumption that most spammers are not personally sending and receiving their emails, but have mindless machines that do it for them. So when some machine sends you an email automatically, it will reside in the ‘unverified’ box on your server until you decide to either verify it or let the system delete it after a few months.

Spam Arrest is not the only company that takes this approach. There may be better systems out there by now? Look around for yourself. Check out the various options. I can’t tell you with certainty which software anti spam solution is the best one for you, but I’d encourage you to be clear about one thing. The problem with spam is that it wastes time. Beware of spam solutions that waste as much time as they save!

Guide to Norton Antivirus 2007 0

Sep24

Norton Antivirus 2007, or shortly NAV 2k7, is the latest product to come from Symantec, the industry leader in the field of security software. Norton Antivirus is well known to pc users around the world and its designed to protect computers against spyware, adware, worms, viruses and other related risks. According to Symantec, there are two major improvements in their latest development which include security technology and performance.

Stats show that there are about 53,000 computer viruses in existence and a new is being created on every 18 seconds! A virus can do anything from showing ads, deleting system files to stealing your personal and credit card information. Most users get infected by an email attachment or by downloading a pirated software, or any other type of software that has a virus attached to it. There are some facts that one must be aware of, but at the end of the day, having an anti-virus installed is an absolute must. First of all, you shouldn’t open any attachments send from a person that you don’t know or you are not sure about. That’s how the majority of computers get infected. And even if you do have a virus scanner, keep your eyes open all the time.

According to the definition given by Wikipedia.org, a computer virus is a ‘program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user.’ This self-reproduction is now made even easier with the popularity of the Internet, because a virus can spread easily across the network – by email or file sharing. Some viruses can damage programs that you already have installed, delete files or even format your entire hard drive. Regardless the type of virus, it will slow down your system and cause system crashes and data loss.

1. Installing Norton Antivirus

The system requirements that your computer must meet to support Norton Antivirus 2007 are:

-Windows XP Home Edition/Professional

-300 MHz or higher processor

-256MB RAM

-150MB of available hard disk space

Although the installation is quite straight forward, there are some facts that you should have in mind. Symantec strongly advices that you dont have any other anti-virus applications installed. If you do, go into the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall them. During the installation process itself, its also a good idea to close as many programs as you can, in order to keep the system load at minimum.

Installing Norton Antivirus 2007 can be done from a CD or by downloading it from the Internet.

A pre-install scan will be performed, which only takes a few minutes, cause its not that thorough. When you start NAV for the first time, LiveUpdate will start and after your confirmation, it will check for the latest virus definitions and software updates available at official website.

If you cant install NAV 2007 and not even the Pre-Install scan, but you have a present Internet Connection, then you can use the Web-based Symantec Security Check, at uses the most current protection updates, including updates that were released after you purchased your product, located at http://security.symantec.com.

2. Activating Norton Antivirus

Activation of the product is required so that you can prove to Symantec you are a legitimate customer. It only takes a few minutes and can be done during the installation or after it. There is a time period in which you are obligated to activate NAV. If you dont do it at the time of the installation, then click on the Activate Your Product alert and select Activate Now. In case you ran into some problems, use the Activate by Phone feature.

3. Navigating through the interface

The whole program interface has been redesigned and simplified. Double click the Norton Antivirus icon and the main window of the application opens up. On the left side are the links, options are in the center, providing access to all Norton AntiVirus features, options, Help, and Support.

The Quick Links on the left side are:

-Norton Account-managing all your Norton product information

-Help-opens up the online help

-Run LiveUpdate-connects to the Symantec server to check for program updates

-Scan Now-immediately scan the pc for threats

-View History-review of the details of your lates scans
The following options are available at the center of the screen:

-Tasks & Scans-invokes functions that are specific for your version

-Settings-to customize the options

-Reports & Statistics-to check the Activity Log and the Online Virus Encyclopedia

-Support-lets you get in touch with live support, security and account info.

4. Getting Support

Sometimes you will need assistance for using Norton Antivirus and you cant find the information in the Help files or at Symantec Website. In such cases, you turn to the Support personnel. To contact technical support, go to http://service.symantec.com/techsupp/.

There is also the option for free-based phone support available for all registered users. Since the support solutions vary from one country to another, check out http://service.symantec.com for a list of the addresses of the Symantec’s International Partner locations outside of USA.

You can contact the free online chat (http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/support/index.jsp), which requires about 15 minutes waiting time, considering how popular this product is, this shouldnt be surprising.

5. The technology behind Norton Antivirus

The detection mechanism has been improved drastically for this version. At Symantec, the developers know that most attacks are aimed at financial gains, instead of notoriety and that the majority of virus writers are mostly modifying existing malicious code rather than developing entirely new threats. NAV 2007 addresses this trend with its new technology designed to detect these viruses and worm families. The product is stronger than ever before and will even located new types of viruses that use rootkits to hide themselves from security software. This is a brand new, patented technology that recognizes all those threats camouflaged as system processes. The scanning capabilities are also improved, you can run it in the background, with low priority requiring less CPU power.

6. New features in Norton Antivirus 2007

There are plenty of new features available in Norton Antivirus 2007. The computer security market is really intense, but there are few other programs quite as robust as this one. In addition to antivirus capabilities, NAV is packed with some great spyware and adware detection tools and it will automatically detect and block highrisk spyware and adware before they are installed on your system, by scanning your emails and all files being downloaded.

The Rootkit Protection is a tool designed to detect and delete hidden threats in Windows OS. The Norton Protection Center provides a central place to easily check overall security settings.

7. Improvements

The improvements in Norton Antivirus 2007 include protection during file-sharing and instant messaging along with the active system scanning. The application automatically updates itself and detects viruses, spyware and adware. Scan times and the interface are also improved. Basically, Symantec has rewritten most of the source code, instead of modifying or adding to the old one. NAV automatically fixes most viruses instead of confusing the user with series of technical questions.

8. Performance

Symantec have done their best to improve performance compared to prior versions. The Full System Scan is now faster than ever before and there is also the ability to let NAV run in background mode, taking minimum system resources.

In terms of memory usage, scan speed, user interface launch speed and HTTP download speed, there major improvements. Stats show that NAV 2007 runs a full scan on a 1GB file set in 2:15 minutes, which is by 30% faster than the competition. The user interface in Norton Antivirus 2007 launches in under 1 second. Individual file scans are also drastically improved as they take only 117 seconds compared to the 320 seconds last year.

9.Cons

There some disadvantages and potential problems related to the use of NAV 2007. It takes up too much hard drive space – 180MB compared to 75MB by McAfee VirusScan Plus. But this shouldn’t much of a problem for the standard computer configuration, which features at least a 100GB HDD. Uninstalling the program is not as straightforward as it should be. Perhaps the developers made everything possible to make life difficult for users trying to remove their product. When you remove NAV, there is a chance that you will loose some or all of your remaining subscriptions with Symantec. Some Symantec references will still be present in the System Registry. Taking the performance into account, it turns out that this year’s NAV loads up 4 seconds longer than its predecessor (62 seconds).

Another fact that you must be familiar with is that, because NAV is probably the most popular antivirus program, more hacker are targeting it so that they can compromise more machines. Just like they tend to focus on other well known products like Outlook, Internet Explorer or Windows itself (compared to Linux).

10. Final Words

Bottom line is that Norton Antivirus 2007 is not just an updated version, it’s a brand new software, with new interface, new protection techniques and improved performance. For a secure download, go to http://www.freesecuredownloads.com.

The Advantages of Bayesian Spam Filters 0

Sep22

Bayesian spam filtering technique is a great way of filtering out the spam from reaching your inbox. M. Sahami, S. Dumais, D. Heckerman, and E. Horvitz proposed this technique in “A Bayesian approach to filtering junk e-mail” in 1998, but until it was described in a paper by Paul Graham, in 2002, it gained no attention. Thereafter, it has become a great technique for distinguishing legitimate email from the illegitimate spam mail. Modern email programs use the Bayesian spam filtering techniques, and so do the server-side email filters, which at times, embed the function of the Bayesian spam filters within the mail server software itself.

The Bayesian spam filters works by analyzing and then calculating the probability of the contents in the email being spam. It self-builds a list of characteristics of spam as well as good elements in the message. Based on the analysis, the message is classified as spam or legitimate. After the message has been classified, the spam filter is further trained on a per-user basis. This is the advantage of Bayesian anti spam filters.

Most spam one receives is more often than not related to one’s activities online. You may have subscribed to an online newsletter, which could be considered as spam. This newsletter, like other newsletters from the same source, is likely to contain common words, such as its name and its email address, from where it originated. Your Bayesian filter will analyze the contents, identify the characteristics, and assign a higher rate of probability to its being spam. All this is based on your specific user activity.

Legitimate emails you receive are different from the spam, and the Bayesian anti spam filter will assign a lower rate of probability of its being spam. In an environment where you receive corporate emails from the same source, the mails will have the same company name, and the names of the clients or customers. These will be analyzed as legitimate by your Bayesian filter.

The Bayesian spam filter’s accuracy improves over time. It analyzes the characteristics that allow it to assess the probability, and whenever the filter incorrectly classifies a message, its corrective training takes over. The probability of each word is unique to each individual user.

The Bayesian filter is exceptional in avoiding false positives. If the email you receive contains the words ‘Nigeria’ or ‘lottery’, which have frequently been seen in spam messages, your Bayesian anti spam filter would probably put it down as a probable, and not reject it outright, as a normal spam filter might. It would look for other characteristics to classify the message. If the mail happens to be from your spouse, it would indicate its legitimacy, and your Bayesian spam filter would overcome the probable spam words.

Is It Really Necessary To Download Anti Spyware Software? 0

Sep22

Spyware is not anything new. The term Spyware was coined in 1995 but it gained the prominence from 2000. As of 2007, spyware has become one of the top security threats to computer systems irrespective of the Operating Systems. If you ask most PC users they will probably tell you that they have bitter experiences with spyware and adware.

Getting Spyware on your PC is inevitable. Your PC is prone to spyware attack and can be infected in many ways. It may be just from opening a wrong email or loading a wrong website or downloading music/movies/anything from a wrong source. Whenever you download a program or file or click on a pop-up ad, there is always a danger of downloading spyware and adware into your system. Whatever may be the reason thousands of the PCs are prone to spyware each and every day.

The following highlight the point that the system is infected by spyware and adware:

  • Unauthorized websites gain access into your favorite bookmarks
  • You are pestered by the horrible popup ads
  • Unknown toolbars gets downloaded without your consent
  • There is a danger that all your web activities can be intercepted by an unauthorized person or entity
  • Your default homepage and settings can be hijacked so that you can’t change them
  • Each and every move you make on the internet can be tracked and watched.
  • Even the brand new PC will be utterly slow
  • Above all your personal and financial information can be sold without your knowledge

So in short, spyware and adware result not only in data corruption, pop-up ads, spying, personal profiling, hacker attacks, but also identity theft which is of more concern.

The severity of the spyware and adware attack is very huge. There are around 80,000 spyware and adware programs on the web and all of them can be a serious threat to your PC. These programs install themselves and slow down the speed of your PC by taking up vast amount of hard disk space and it is impossible to remove them manually without the aid of anti spyware or anti adware software.

There are a number of anti spyware and anti adware software programs but only the top anti spyware and anti adware software downloads are to be taken into account due to their reliability that are more safe and secure.

The anti spyware and anti adware download software helps in 3 different ways:

  • Scans your PC for hidden spyware and adware and removes them permanently.
  • Their advanced software blocks spyware and adware from sneaking your PC.
  • You are notified the moment a spyware application attempts to run on your system. Thus an anti spyware and anti adware software application gives you a pre-alert of the possible spyware attack.

So in the world of increased security threat, there is a desperate necessity for anti spyware and anti adware software applications. Their role is not limited to just remove or disable the spyware and adware programs, but in fact to totally block them.

Safeguard Your PC With An AntiVirus Software Download 0

Sep22

Firstly, a few words on viruses, a computer virus is a program or programming code that replicates by being copied or initiating its copying to another program, computer boot sector or document. So a virus is nothing but a small program made up of binary code i.e ones and zeroes just like the other programs that run the PC and the precise order of that code is called the virus’ signature. Each virus has a different signature.

In contrast to viruses, computer worms are malicious programs that replica themselves from system to system, rather than infiltrating legitimate files.

Let me tell you even a small virus can do several bad things to your computer. This may quickly use your entire computer’s available memory and slow down the system or bring it to a halt. It can delete files, format hard drives or mix up the data on them. Totally a virus program makes it impossible for you to access the computer. They can attack virtually all operating systems; however, they are most common on Windows 9x machines.

Methods of transmitting viruses:

The most common methods of transmitting viruses include downloads from the internet, files saved from floppy disks, and e-mail attachments. Despite being popular, Floppies are highly sensitive to their environment (dust, moisture, humidity, magnetic fields etc) which can lead to damage and corruption of files and they transfer viruses across the computers.

While the diskette has declined in recent years, it still accounts for almost 20% of viruses transferred, while e-mail’s share has increased to almost 60%. In fact, Virus writers use the names of well-known people in order to entice users into clicking on Web links or open up files that then infect their computers. Examples include well known viruses such as the “ILoveYou” or Love Letter and the “Anna Kournikova,” Michael Jackson has attempted suicide mail, etc. According to a survey, the top 10 list of celebrity virus rankings is: Britney Spears, Bill Gates, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Osama Bin Laden, Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton, Anna Kournikova, Paris Hilton, and Pamela Anderson.

Tips on avoiding Viruses and Worms:

  • Install antivirus software, update regularly, and use it regularly.
  • Install security patches
  • Use a firewall and secure your browser.
  • Never open unsolicited e-mail attachments with the file extensions VBS, SHS, or PIF.
  • Disconnect your network or modem cable when youre not using your computer-or just power it down.
  • Avoid P2P and distributed filesharing.
  • Avoid attachments with sexual file names.

What is AntiVirus Software?

Antivirus software consists of computer programs that attempt to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (malware). Antivirus software programs can contain between 40,000 – 100,000 “virus definitions” that are updated on a daily or as needed basis. When you purchase antivirus software you receive the software but the definitions that you receive are the real value in your purchase. Once those have expired, then you need to extend the service or purchase new software.

The benefits of AntiVirus Software:

  • High quality virus protection provided by antivirus research team.
  • Automatic updates take care of everything.
  • A comprehensive scan of CD/DVD-ROMs, diskettes, USB sticks, Internet surfing and Internet downloads.
  • Once a virus has been detected, the antivirus software will quarantine it, so it cannot spread. It will then attempt to erase it and repair any file damage caused.

There are competing claims for the innovator of the first antivirus product. Perhaps the first publicly known neutralization of a wild PC virus was performed by European Bernt Fix (also Bernd) in early 1987. Later on many antivirus softwares has been developed by notable research teams. Some of them are as follows:

Avast, Anti vir, AVG Anti-Virus, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky AntiVirus, MaAfee Virus Scan, NOD32, Norman, Norton AntiVirus, Panda AntiVirus, PC-cillin, PC Tools AntiVirus, Windows Live OneCare, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus.

Out of all these antivirus softwares, AVG, AntiVir Guard and Avast do provide the free subscription. There are differences between free and paid antivirus software programs. The paid antivirus program detects and disarm the dangerous attachment even before you open it, whereas the free product may not discover the virus until you click the attachment. However, the free product still stops the virus from opening and doing its dirty work. Overall, the protection offered by the free anti-virus packages is solid, if not as feature-rich as the paid alternatives.

Bayesian Spam Filters – How Do They Work 0

Sep21

Bayesian spam filters, which are a type of scoring content-based spam filters, analyze the contents of the mail, and calculate the probability of the message being spam. It builds up a list of characteristics of elements that are typically spam as well as good emails. The advantage of the Bayesian spam filters is that they build up the list of characteristics themselves, and do not depend on the manually built list.

Bayesian anti spam filters more or less try to emulate how you personally identify your spam emails. One look at an email tells you whether the email is genuine or spam. The probability that you will characterize a good mail as spam is ‘zero’. Ideally, it would be great if spam filters do work in the same way. At least, the Bayesian filters are trying in this direction.

Spam Filtering

Suppose that the word ‘textile’ often appears in your legitimate mails, but never in your spam mails, then there is zero probability of the word ‘textile’ indicating spam. On the other hand, the words ‘Nigeria’ and ‘lottery’ quite often and at times most exclusively, appear as spam – made famous by the 419 scams out of Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.

For Bayesian spam filters, these two words ‘Nigeria’ and ‘lottery’ have every probability of being found in spam emails – as much as 100 percent.

Whenever you receive a new message, the Bayesian anti spam filter analyzes it, and calculates, by using the individual characteristics, the probability of it being a spam. If it so happens that your message contains both words, ‘textiles’ and ‘Nigeria’ or ‘lottery’, the Bayesian spam filter cannot ascertain whether the message is a genuine one or a spam. It will further analyze other characteristics that will allow it to assess the probability of classifying the message as either, spam or legitimate.

Bayesian Spam Filters – Adapting Automatically

Once you have classified the message, as shown above, it can be used to further train the spam filter. This is how it works. In the above scenario:

  • If the message is analyzed as being spam, then the probability of the word ‘textile’ indicating legitimate mail is lessened.

  • If the message is analyzed as being legitimate mail, then the probability of the words, ‘Nigeria’ or ‘lottery’ – whichever was used – needs to be re-analyzed and re-considered as spam.

The advantage of Bayesian filters is that they self adapt by learning from their own decisions, as well as the user’s decisions – if made manually. This automatic adaptability of the Bayesian anti spam filters is excellent for individual email users. Most spam emails have very similar and at times identical characteristics, whereas the characteristics of legitimate mails are different for each individual.

Is NoAdware Really A Free Anti Spyware Download? 0

Sep21

Spyware Attack is regularly in the news by many of the Computer magazines. Moreover when i came to knew that through spyware attack, many of the companies are losing millions of dollars, I made the decision to have an anti spyware download software in my PC so that I could be safe against the security issues.

When I searched for the term “Free Anti Spyware Download“, the search engine gave me a number of results. So I browsed each and every website and studied the reviews of the free anti spyware download software’s.

After doing my own research, I’ came to the conclusion that many of the free anti spyware download softwares are rogue softwares. When we download the free anti spyware, they install the spyware and other malware into our PC and pretend that they will clean all the spywares present in our PC.

But in fact, in reality they are installing the spyware and recommending us to buy the software. It is totally a different scenario where the software instead of helping us doing more harm.

However, there was an exception. NoAdware is a top class free anti spyware software with has many user friendly features. No Adware 5.0 is constantly updated to identify the latest threats to our privacy. The software will scan the PC for different Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and Web Bug traces.

These items not only create nuisances in the form of pop-ups, system slowdowns and crashes, but many items actually record personal information, such as credit cards, social security numbers, or other sensitive information.

However, after thorough research, I’ve come to the conclusion that NoAdware is a great free anti spyware download software application which really has a good potential to remove the spyware. It is one of the top revolutionary product.

For every other free anti spyware download softwares, one has to pay each year, whereas NoAdware just asked for a one off payment for lifetime use and updates. And, more amazingly, the one off payment was LESS than the annual charge of the other software packages. Finally, it was not a difficult decision in the end.

Antivirus Software – A Must-Have Protection for Computers 0

Sep21

With the advent of computer viruses of all kinds, antivirus software installation in PCs has become a necessity. The antivirus software comprise of computer programs which strive to identify viruses and ‘malware’ (other malicious software), thwart their endeavors and eliminate them altogether.

About Antivirus Software

The Basics Of Bayesian Spam Filtering 0

Sep20

Bayesian spam filtering has become a popular way to distinguish between legitimate emails and illegitimate spam emails, through a process that uses Bayesian statistical methods. It filters emails by classifying documents into categories. Based on the contents of the message in your email, these mail filters calculates the probability of the message being a spam. They are much more robust than the normal content based filters, and their anti spam approach hardly has false positives.

Normally when you receive an email, one look tells you whether the email is a spam or not. To your eyes, there is ‘zero’ probability of such mail looking like a good email. How would it be if spam filters, too, worked in the same way!

Bayesian Spam Filters

Bayesian filters for spam are what are known as scoring content-based spam filters. They try to work the way your eye does in identifying spam emails, by looking for words and other characteristics that typify spam. Every characteristic typical of spam is assigned a score, and the total spam score for the whole message is computed. Depending on the type of Bayesian filter you are using, it may also look for legitimate email characteristics, thereby lowering the total score.

The basic difference between the Bayesian spam filters and other simple scoring content based spam filters is that the Bayesian anti spam filters build the list themselves, as against other filters that depend on a manually built list of characteristics.

You start with a sizable bunch of emails you have identified as spam, and another bunch of good emails. The filters look at both, the legitimate and the spam emails and calculate in what probability various characters appear in them. Bayesian anti spam filters may look at:

  • The words in the message body

  • The headers (message paths and senders)
  • The word pairs and phrases
  • HTML code, such as colors
  • Where a particular phrase appears (meta information)

The Problems With Scoring Content Based Filters

Though the scoring based spam filters work well, they also encounter certain problems; the normal ones more so than the Bayesian spam filters. These are some of the problems faced:

  • The scoring content based spam filters build a list of characteristics from the spam emails and the good emails they get. For building a good list of spam characteristics, mail needs to be collected from hundreds of sources (email addresses). This may weaken the efficiency of the spam filters, as the characteristics of the good email would be different for each person.

  • If the spammers make an effort to make their mails look like genuine mails, the filtering characteristics may have to be corrected manually – a very big effort.
